With the entry into force of the Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence, Moldova was included in the monitoring procedure launched in February 2022 by the Group of Experts on Action against Violence against Women (GREVIO) of the Council of Europe.
On January 30, the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection organized the first meeting of GREVIO experts with representatives of public authorities and institutions tasked with preventing and combating domestic violence.
The international delegation includes: Laura Albu – a member of the GREVIO group from Romania; Maria Rún Bjarnadóttir – a member of the GREVIO group from Iceland; Louise Hooper, an international expert in human rights and migration; and Elif Sariaydin, administrator of the Istanbul Convention Secretariat.
The monitoring procedure for implementing the Convention consists of three stages:
– Presentation of the country report on the implementation of the Istanbul Convention (submitted to the Council of Europe on September 29, 2022);
– Country monitoring visit by the GREVIO expert group of the Council of Europe;
– The GREVIO expert group evaluation report, which will be presented to the Government of the Republic of Moldova by the end of 2023.
During the evaluation visit, the GREVIO expert group held both joint and bilateral meetings with representatives from the Prosecutor General's Office, the Ministry of Justice, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Ministry of Education and Research, the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Moldova, local public authorities from the municipality of Ungheni, as well as with representatives of civil society.
