The Government has approved, with certain recommendations, the draft law to amend the Law on the Prevention and Combating of Domestic Violence, which will enable the creation of the National Agency for the Prevention and Combating of Violence against Women and Domestic Violence.
The proposed amendments will strengthen the institutional mechanism for preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence, focusing on the needs of victims, which is one of the Government's key priorities. Furthermore, they will ensure the alignment of the national legal framework with the provisions of the Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence (Istanbul Convention), in force in the Republic of Moldova since May 1, 2022.
The Agency will operate under the Government’s authority and will be responsible for coordinating inter-institutional efforts to prevent and combat violence against women and domestic violence, as well as overseeing the implementation of national programs. Additionally, it will provide support to the Government in the implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of policies in this area, ensure cooperation and dialogue with civil society, and report on the application of the Istanbul Convention at the national level.
