The implementation of the Istanbul Convention discussed during the Joint Dialogue

Chișinău, May 25, 2022 – The process of implementing the Istanbul Convention was debated during an intersectoral dialogue. Today, an event titled "Joint Dialogue – The Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence Against Women and Domestic Violence: From Ratification to Implementation" took place at the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova. This event was organized on the platform of the Committee on Foreign Policy and European Integration, in collaboration with UN Women, the Swedish Embassy in Chișinău, and in partnership with the National Coalition "Life Without Violence in the Family."

The event was attended by deputies, representatives of relevant ministries, development partners, and members of civil society.

"The most important thing is to coordinate all efforts. That’s why we felt it necessary to gather for this joint dialogue, to exchange opinions, and to see what visions and commitments we all need to assume," stated Doina Gherman, the Chair of the Committee on Foreign Policy and European Integration.

Participants noted the need to combine efforts to prevent and combat violence against women and domestic violence and to ensure respect for the fundamental rights of citizens.

Unfortunately, violence is a reality in our country. According to statistical data, one in three women experiences this form of abuse in their own home. In this context, it is our duty to act through laws, public policies, and by raising societal awareness to prevent and combat this phenomenon," stated Doina Gherman, the Chair of the Committee on Foreign Policy and European Integration.

Last year, Parliament ratified the Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence Against Women and Domestic Violence. The document includes provisions through which the states party to this Convention ensure the prevention and combatting of violence against women and domestic violence, the protection of victims, the prosecution of offenders, and the adoption of integrated policies.
