On Tuesday, March 5, 2019, the Director of the National Institute of Justice, Diana Scobioală, met with Anca Sandescu, the project manager for "Women's Access to Justice: Implementing the Istanbul Convention and Other European Standards for Gender Equality."
During the meeting, they discussed the collaboration between the Council of Europe and the European Union with the National Institute of Justice on the project regarding women's access to justice in six Eastern Partnership countries: Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine. The new project outlines activities over a three-year period (2019-2021) aimed at strengthening the judicial systems' capacity to ensure women's access to justice, in accordance with the CoE Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence Against Women and Domestic Violence.
In this context, Anca Sandescu presented Phase II of the project, which focuses on introducing measures to ensure that the entire justice system is sensitized to gender dimensions and that new competencies regarding access to justice standards are applied in accordance with the Istanbul Convention.
Project partners include the National Institute of Justice of Moldova, the Justice Academy of Armenia, the Justice Academy of Azerbaijan, the National Institute for the Qualification of Judges, Prosecutors, and Legal Professionals of Belarus, the Higher School of Justice in Georgia, the Prosecutor's Office of Georgia, the National School of Judges of Ukraine, and the National Academy of Prosecutors of Ukraine.
The project's implementation aims to facilitate the signing/ratification of the Istanbul Convention in alignment with the European Union's objectives for 2020.
