Moldova has Committed to Nine Initiatives Focused on Refugee Inclusion, Children's Rights, Gender Equality, Education, and the Eradication of Statelessness at the 2023 Global Refugee Forum.

The Minister of Labor and Social Protection, Alexei Buzu, along with the Minister of Internal Affairs, Adrian Efros, represented Moldova at the 2023 Global Refugee Forum held from December 13 to 15 in Geneva, Switzerland.

At the forum, Moldova committed to fulfilling nine objectives focused on refugee inclusion, protecting children's rights, promoting gender equality, reducing the risk of gender-based violence, and providing comprehensive services for refugee survivors.

Minister Alexei Buzu stated, "In nearly two years, over 900,000 refugees have crossed our borders, and about 112,000 have chosen to remain in Moldova, making it the country with the highest number of refugees per capita. Despite economic challenges and limited resources, we have opened our country and homes to Ukrainian refugees and are making considerable efforts to mitigate the impact of regional crises on structural reforms."

Since March 2023, the Government has introduced temporary protection, which provides greater stability and access to various services for refugees. Measures have also been taken to facilitate their integration into society.

"Ensuring a safe living environment and access to rights and services for refugees is a priority in our country. It is essential to protect the rights of those who have sought temporary protection in Moldova and to work collectively to identify sustainable solutions," stated Minister of Internal Affairs Adrian Efros during the session on the situation in Ukraine.

During the meeting, the UN Country Team in Moldova reaffirmed its support for refugees. "Moldova continues to be a remarkable example," said Francesca Bonelli, UNHCR representative in Moldova. "Since February 24, the country has taken bold steps to create a safe and welcoming environment for refugees. Moldova's example deserves to be supported, appreciated, and emulated."

Additionally, the Government expressed its intention to become part of the Global Alliance for the Eradication of Statelessness. Furthermore, the Government will ensure enrollment and access to quality and inclusive education for all refugee children within Moldova's education system.

The 2023 Global Refugee Forum takes place from December 13 to 15 at Palexpo in Geneva, Switzerland, with activities held at other locations as well. The event is organized by five countries: Colombia, France, Japan, Jordan, and Uganda, and is co-hosted by the Government of Switzerland and UNHCR.

Held every four years, the Global Refugee Forum is the largest international gathering in the world addressing refugee issues. The event is designed to support the practical implementation of the objectives set forth in the Global Compact on Refugees: reducing pressures on host countries, enhancing refugee autonomy, increasing access to solutions in third countries, and improving conditions in countries of origin. The forum also provides states and stakeholders with the opportunity to announce concrete commitments and contributions, highlight progress made, share best practices, and assess challenges and opportunities.
